The Golden Rule: O Wisdom ! O Precious Pearl !

The Golden Rule: O Wisdom ! O Precious Pearl ! The “Golden Rule is first found in the Old Testament: Leviticus 19.17-18: “Do not bear a grudge against anyone, but settle your differences, so that you will not commit a sin. Do not take revenge on anyone, or continue to hate - but love your neighbour as you love yourself….”

The Old Testament Book of Proverbs tells us what is is that “The Lord (God) Hates”:
“a proud look, lies, killing, wicked plans, evil deeds, false witness, and troublemakers” (See Proverbs 6.16-19). The Prophet Micah, in his Old Testament message has this to say:

The Lord has told us what is good. What God requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God (Micah 6.8).

Wisdom is described in the Old Testament Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, and we ignore this at our peril.

This expression of the Golden Rule is common to Jews, Christians and Muslims. And in fact, is common to all religions, and is variously expressed:

Do not do to others that which you would hate yourself”. “Do unto others as you would for yourself”. “Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you”: “Do unto all as you would wish to have done unto you”: “Reject for others that what you would reject for yourself” etc. etc: “love your neighbour as you love yourself”.

This important message is central to the message of the New Testament’s Jesus: “Love your neighbour as you love yourself (Luke 10.27). Do this and you will live (Luke 10.28). Loving your neighbour as you love yourself IS loving the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength (Luke10.27-28). Do not judge others, and God will not judge you; do not condemn others, and God will not condemn you; forgive others, and God will forgive you. Give to others, and God will give to you (Luke 6.37)”.

Lest we forget.
